ChatGPT and Education: Implications & Tips

What is the potential for ChatGPT and education? Read our insights & tips for how to use it on your school website.

ChatGPT is the AI software making waves for its ability to write anything from a high school essay to a recipe for chocolate chip cookies with very little human input. When we think about ChatGPT and education, most of the time we focus on the problems: students will use it to plagiarize or cheat on their essays, teachers will have to find new ways to evaluate writing, it’s going to replace jobs in the future, etc. When viewed through a positive lens, the invention of AI software like this is an invitation for educators to innovate, change, and think outside the box.

But also—what if there were a place for ChatGPT in education, where it could be useful? For busy school and district leaders, ChatGPT offers you an opportunity to work smarter, not harder. It can be used to keep your school website up to date  with quick and easy content, powered by AI.

Want to see it in action? After the line break below, ChatGPT wrote the rest of this blog post for me. I went to the ChatGPT site and typed in the following prompt:

Write a blog post for blog.edlio.com explaining how K-12 education leaders can use ChatGPT to create content for their school websites. Give specific examples and tips as well as pros and cons of using ChatGPT for this purpose. Include the keyword phrase “ChatGPT and education” in the title, the body of the blog, and at least one section header.

Let’s see how it did.

ChatGPT and Education: How K-12 Education Leaders Can Use AI-Powered Writing Assistance to Create Content for Their School Websites

In today's digital age, having a well-maintained website is essential for any K-12 school or district. It's the first point of contact for prospective families and the primary source of information for current ones. However, creating fresh, engaging, and informative content for a school website can be time-consuming and challenging. That's where ChatGPT, an AI-powered writing assistant, comes into play. In this blog post, we'll explore how K-12 education leaders can leverage ChatGPT to create content for their school websites and discuss its pros and cons.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered language model developed by OpenAI. It uses deep learning algorithms to generate human-like text based on the input provided to it. ChatGPT can understand and respond to natural language, making it an ideal tool for creating content for school websites.

How K-12 Education Leaders Can Use ChatGPT to Create Content for Their School Websites

Newsletters and Announcements

  1. One of the most common uses of ChatGPT is to create newsletters and announcements. K-12 education leaders can provide a brief summary of an event or news item, and ChatGPT can create an informative and engaging article that can be used as a newsletter or announcement.

Tips for Using ChatGPT in Education

Provide Clear and Concise Instructions

  1. To get the most out of ChatGPT, provide clear and concise instructions for what you want the content to say.

To get the most out of ChatGPT, provide clear and concise instructions, review and edit the output, and use it as a tool

Author’s Conclusion

Me again. I intentionally chose to leave the ChatGPT content exactly as it was produced by the AI; I didn’t make any corrections to its grammar, word choice, or overall content. I wanted you to be able to see exactly what it produces, so in this case you can see some areas where it might need to be tweaked before it was published in any other scenario. You’ll note, for example, that it tends to cut off in the middle of a sentence at the end, and I’m not sure if that’s due to word count limitations or if it just got tired.

In any case, it took ChatGPT about 5 seconds to write all of that content, and it would only take me a few more minutes of checking and proofreading to make it ready to publish. It’s part of my job to show educators how the power of technology can help make their jobs easier, so in the spirit of that, I believe ChatGPT does have a place in the world of education and that it can actually improve the quality and consistency of your website content.

Much like a calculator, ChatGPT has to be operated by someone who knows what they’re doing; but in the right hands, it can be a tool that improves productivity and gives back some of your time, and I think that’s a win.
